Be afraid, I’m getting Raid.

No No, I’m not going to spray my Buckwild down with bug killer to prevent hard drive crashes. I am going to set up a redundant array of independent disks (RAID). Jason P, a good buddy of mine, is sending a few 40gig hard drives in the mail. Thanks to him this is more like an array of inexpensive disks. With these disks I will be able set up one fault tolerant drive so that if one of the drives, just one, should happen to fail, I will experience no data loss. This means that I won’t be loosing buckwild and the entire precious posts on this blog. Thanks to J my service levels will be through the roof and I shall be able to charge 1000s dollars a day to host your web site.

I am not sure if I will set up a mirror, where Drive A duplicates the information on to Drive B. If Drive A should happen to fail, all you information is exists on Drive B. The draw back to mirroring is that your total storage is half of both drives storage combined.

I also have to opportunity to set up disk stripping with fault tolerance. This requires 3 drives at a minimum. A bit of data is stored on Drive A, B and C. Should one of the Drives fail, the other two have enough information to rebuild the failed drive. The benefit of stripping is that your total storage space is 2/3 of the 3 drives combined but you have to fork out the bucks for 3 drives instead of 1 or 2.
